Like a rock, Bob Seger sings ... But in fact, with this challenging and strenuous hike in the company of Vercelli Brother's fully booked, I was not firm and indestructible as a rock, indeed. After a period of easy walks, lake, mountain trails go back to very hilly, the crisis has brought into my muscles began to show signs of tears and cramps since already from mid-rise. Let my brothers would continue their pace, I adapted to my condition, and slowly I've reached the goal we set ourselves the summit of the Mass of Turlo, also known as The Giandolino.
Uploaded on stock and barrel "Pandino" Arnaldo, we headed towards Valsesia reaching short, despite some minor snag traffic, Varallo. Here we diverted right onto Valley Mastallone, the first of two very important side valleys that characterize the mountain slope of Valsesia. (The other is the valley that leads to Sermenza Rima and that splits in half right in the valley, culminating in the basin of Egua Carcoforo). I walk along the initial stretch for about four kilometers and then, in places Barattina, we take the right fork that goes up Cervarolo, while it continues narrow and winding, passing the bridge of the "Gula" creeping toward Sand and its deviation to the right again and then to val Sabbiola Cervatto Fobello and then died in the Valley Baranca bordering the valley of Anzasca Maccugnaga, a further branch to the right, prima di Cervatto e del "Ponte Due Acque", risale fino a Rimella e poi San Gottardo, punto di partenza per la Bocchetta di Campello che dà l'accesso alla alta Valle Strona.

Provvediamo a girare l'auto e parcheggiarla in direzione di discesa alongside the dirt road where several cars are already positioned. We load up the backpack, turn on the trusty GPS and start the hike. We opt for the path that leads to the beautiful church that welcomes us in this wonderful Alps.
Arnaldo went to look inside
at this beautiful chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Snows are collected, the first Sunday of August each year, the inhabitants of Cervarolo and its surroundings to celebrate the occasion precisely.
begin to follow the path marked with the number 640 which begins at the church, and that allows us to observe what will be the destination of our walk. Gianfranco invites us to admire, there behind him, the ridges that we must travel to reach the top first and then the mass Ventolaro Turlo.
put a strong emphasis in the north. When passing through the plan, other lodges, we see a second shelter. E 'refuge, private Gaudenzio Cerini, well used to catering. In this room we can post pictures of the sixties, obtained from the site of the town of Cervarolo. Again If we make a comparison with the image taken today, taking into account, however, the perspective and the different framing of the picture, noting that the extension has been made.
On seeing the old images that portrayed the area of \u200b\u200bthe Plain, we can not fail to note that pastures had in the past against the prevalence of the land occupied by forests and vegetation. Certainly we can deduce that the time was important to the business of farming and herding mountaineers, so that even the land was suitable to the task. Today, while maintaining the basic function of grazing pasture has become perhaps the place used as a residence summer for owners of the huts. We have not noticed, today, engaged in the business, while some photos, taken from the site of Cervarolo always, document which, instead, we place in our day.
The goal is still far, but the beautiful day and we are discovering the beautiful places that make us a good mood. Become even more so when we meet an elderly couple who are descended from Cima Mazza Fontanelle, or at least from the woods of its slopes to the left of the Alpe. She carries on his shoulders a large enough gerletta. We understand that mushroom hunters, who came to start their season at this place so popular for this thing: every year Cervarolo held a festival dedicated exclusively to funjat. Arnold and Eugene, too passionate seekers, can not help but smile in the face of hope and confidence so equipped lady ... are allowed to throw a question that already know how to give a definite answer. "Quonti truvanu you?" "Gnonca umbriia the ..." disconsolate and disappointed is their claim. Definitely too early with the times! So we continue towards the end of the plain between us making comment on a little sarcastic ... "The vuleva Forsi impinì the sciuvera ?"...
We continued with two elderly gentlemen Biella (even eighty-one ...) that had preceded us in the car to climb Cervarolo cederci then walk when the road became dirt, probably because they did not know how far to go with the medium. Found, after preparation, kept us company for a bit of a journey, sharing with us the stretch, after a beautiful forest of beech trees, made us come to a grassy area dotted with scattered beeches and birches.
After this mixed soil in area to the Vanecc Crosa delle Piane, we gain altitude quickly enough and eventually broaden our horizons and allow us to admire the magnificent panorama that starts to unravel before our occhi.
In questo tratto di percorso fiancheggiamo dei piccoli avallamenti di terreno, quasi impercettibili and without any particular highlights that attract attention. We will note some because, as quoted by Stephen Towers, estimated Novarese caving on its website "torriste" http://www.torriste.it/90931.php , we read that there are a manifestation of a natural phenomenon, very best-known and obvious in the Carso, which gives rise to the "sinkholes" cavities below the ground, which once sold, blocking with his material and collapse with the consequence that endorsement superficale.Eccone two very small, maybe half a meter in diameter, indicated by Arnaldo shaded as dark spots. And another larger and shallow, however, does not show up very well in the picture.
Around 1400 meters above sea level, to avoid a difficult passage rocky, the trail turns slightly to the east ridge and leaving the remaining half to the coast, sheltered from the wind and also surrounded by a very few birch which gives some relief from the sun that is beginning to be sentire. In this area, the return will Eugenio raspberry patch whose bushes along a beautiful stretch of percorso.Questo long traverse from the Val Bagnola, is accompanied by dense and disturbing erborescenza we all reject him assimilates in the heat early in the morning now advanced.
begin to experience some fatigue and shortness of breath comes to me. So more often I stop and let the brothers take a good advantage. Looking up to the top, sometimes do not see them even more then me a little demoralized for not being able to maintain their pace. But with the sweeping view all around, once returned to crest the ridge that overlooks the valley Sabbiola, the heart enlarges and rejoices in this wonderful sight that fills our eyes.
The slopes are more pronounced peak but still can not see. I look up and I understand that my brothers came to the Cima Ventolaro and are waiting for me. I gather some courage and slowly but surely, I am going to the first, minimum, a goal that we set at the start. "If you can not do it, we stop at Ventolaro," we agreed ... And here I am, too, met, got to enjoy this great show at 360 degrees, and behind me the Mass of Turlo still far .... but before the clearing of grasslands Alpe plan so far is now down below to take pride in the path taken so far.
Here at the Top of Ventolaro, whose name probably refers to exposure to the four winds to which it is submitted, we make a nice stop. We refreshed and take pictures and the beautiful view offered to us. It is more natural to turn our gaze to the west, where the Monte Rosa massif imposes its shape. But we can not underestimate the attraction that offers the winding, narrow valley Sabbiola of which we can also see the last two towns that stand in the middle of the woods: Wages and Erbareti. And yet the grooves as deep wrinkles, created by small rivers that originate on the side of Cima di Razzarola (1714 m.) which slopes towards the north to the alpine Cevia the Colmetto and Alpe Campo. Wonderful saddle from which you can pass on the western side of the ridge and the closing of the val Sabbiola back until around Monte Capio and the ridge separating the valley from Val Sesia Strona.
We turn then to the summit ahead of us and which we can already see the Cross: the Mass of Turlo "seems" there at hand ... we can not stop here and give up his achievement! Ventolaro We left the rope and run along the shoulder view that starts coming down slightly and losing a few feet of altitude to then go back with good slope and a cobbled path and sometimes rocky. Beginning to experience some cramping thighs. I try not to push too hard and keep a step as short as possible, but unfortunately we must conquer meters in altitude, and then the foot can not help but force the leg to raise it to the next step. I let go of my brothers once again screaming that they might not do it, but I still, however, suffering every time I have to give the impetus for the rise. I stop almost every two steps and courage for me to look back occasionally to review the path already passed and are reluctant to look instead at the top ...
rocky stretch in the back you lose sight of the summit as well and it seems that the point of arrival will be removed rather than have approached! It seems that to overcome new heights Appiano from nothing! overcome with great difficulty, finally the rock and it seems that the path, appianatosi and returned on clay to give me a hand to overcome the critical moment. Reappears summit cross, but it still seems far away! The path for this stretch that rises gently, almost flat, take the direction towards the east and then rises over a bump, called the 'Umet "encountered almost in slow motion because of the tear that grips the right thigh .
After the grassy hump, there is a breather as the first slope of the terminal, it runs a few yards downhill and even my muscles have a moment of respite. It then takes to rise, slowly at first and then harder still to win the last meters of altitude difference that separate me from mia "conquista".
With one last effort, I sling the stone bench that is placed on a pitch just below the cross. Unusual structure of long tubular steel painted in white, bolted together with musketeer on horizontal rods connecting them, rests on a square base of stones cemented together. Inside is housed the summit book on which to affix his signature to seal the arrival at the top. All around the cross stand out signs dela presence of a large herd of goats ... Still fresh and "fragrance" are the tracks and the memories left by quafrupedi. The "nice smell" has run away to places biellsi the freshest and most suitable perconsumare their meal without additional doses of "perfume" unscheduled amalgamated with that of their robust sandwiches. We resist and we magnificence on the stone benches and deposited the bags on the solid plank finally to extract a well-earned snack.
deserve a mention and some photographs of the work done by the inhabitants of the Valley in collaboration with those Bagnola Sanbughetto Valley in August 2003 after twenty years from the inauguration of the new cross Massa Turlo, for positioning the plank benches and stones, assisted by the opportunity to share in transportation made the helicopter. (Go to the beautiful and already mentioned site of Cervarolo, edited by Frenk, to read and see more pictures of the work).
After we had eaten enough, we stroll to the summit pausing to admire the wonderful landscape, not to be given a first-timer of Vercelli Brother's complete with our backs to the Valle Strona. To the west of the Valley Sabbiola the groove, which goes to die in the foothills of the magnificent mountains that surround the southern and western basin of the Valle Strona. Behind them, overlooking the Monte Rosa.
North Strona valley with the majestic Mount Mason who embrace it. To the east, the ridge that passes the bat, the Monte Croce, other means of ascent to the Alpe Camasco Giandolino beginning, clearly visible with its green pastures and behind Mazzoccone. Further east Mottarone. The blue stain on the right is Lake Orta, which is enclosed by Mazzone, Cesara above, and Mount Novesso.
To the south the first part of the Val Sesia, the valley Bagnola with its branches, Cervarolo, Alpe plans and then the same route we followed from the top Ventolaro forward.
to complete and summarize this series of images, yet take advantage of the site Cervarolo to add this wonderful collage of photographs that I have found e che illustrano lo spettacoloso panorama a 360 gradi che si può godere dalla vetta della Massa del Turlo.
